SPEAKER's BIO:
   International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS) Director Satish Babu has been appointed as the Chair of the Global Steering Committee of its newly-formed Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technologies (SIGHT) of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Satish Babu is the national President of the Computer Society of India (CSI), the country's largest society of IT professionals that was founded in 1965. He is also the current President of the South Asian Regional Computer Confederation (SEARCC), a regional association of national computer societies of Asia-Pacific countries. He is the Chair of IEEE Kerala Section, Vice President of IEEE India Council, and holds multiple international positions in IEEE Computer Society.

 

 

TOPIC 1: Free and Open Source Software as an Enabler
Abstract: 
The Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) movement was founded over 25 years ago as an alternative methodology for the creation, distribution and ownership of software. From its origins in a few small projects, FOSS has grown in stature and presence to a global movement encompassing technological and social dimensions, and provide a viable alternative to individuals, enterprises and nations. Today, through such software as Android SmartPhone OS, LibreOffice, Java and Ubuntu, FOSS has become virtually mainstream.
The presentation examines the history of FOSS, the factors that permitted its growth and the current status.
 
TOPIC 2: IT in India: A success story

Abstract: 
Among all the developing countries, India stands unique in creating a niche for itself in the IT revolution that started in the nineties. Today, India has a USD 100-billion IT/ITES industry that employs about 3 million people directly and close to 9 million indirectly.
The presentation looks at the drivers that propelled India in the creation of this new sector of its economy, and which keeps its growth at a robust 9% annually.

Chapters offer the opportunity for Computer Society members in local areas to network with colleagues, develop activities for professional development, and share expertise through technical exchange. The Computer Society has over 375 chapters, national and international, professional and student.
The Computer Society offers a range of services to help chapter leaders and members create active, viable chapters. One of them is Memeber Visiting Program (MVP). CS Members are experts in the topics most of interest to our members. This program makes it easy for a IEEE CS member to present to our Chapters even when travelling to remote locations. IEEE members visiting other chapters and sections during their normally planned trips, vacations, etc.
